Our History

Our History
The Order of the Canardiers (l’Ordre des Canardiers) was created in January 1986 by Michel GUERET,

Founding President, with 20 chefs and community leaders in Rouen, France, who cared for the maintenance of a particular cultural heritage of Normandy: culinary art, symbolized by the development of a great regional recipe, Rouennaise Duckling. With the support of Mayor and Senator Jean LECANUET, the Ordre des Canardiers spread in France and abroad. Its main activity consists of promoting traditional recipes and hosting fabulous dinners accompanied by fabulous wines.
The Ordre des Canardiers and the City of Rouen are linked in two ways : first, the Mayor of Rouen serves as the Great Honourable Canardier; and second, the Canardiers’ coat of arms is inspired by that of the City of Rouen:

Members of the Canardiers are either professional chefs, who are inducted as “Master Canardiers” (“Maîtres Canardiers”), or individual gourmets who support traditional French dining and fine wine and are inducted as Lady Canardiers (“Dames Canardiers”) or Gentleman Canardiers (“Gentilhommes Canardiers”).
The Chicago chapter of the Canardiers was founded in 1990 and is one of the most active in the world. A gala 30th anniversary dinner was held at the Woman’s Athletic Club with 80 members and guests in the presence of Mr. Patrice Thomas, worldwide President of Les Canardiers.
